There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent spot, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and even though visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is true of most borders.

The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling den, highlights 150 slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive resort and hotel complex that highlights numerous comforts in addition to the gambling den, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
